Unless you do plumbing work just on your own property or a few other special situations, you'll need a license to work in Vermont.

To get information on these exceptions and an application contact:

State Plumbers Licensing Board

Department of Labor and Industry

National Life Bldg., Drawer 20

Montpelier, VT 05620-3401

The Board issues master, journeyman, and specialists licenses. Specialist classifications are water heater specialist, hydronic heating specialist, and water treatment specialist.

The Board will review your application and if you're eligible they'll send you information on the exam they require for a license. For any license, you must certify that you don't owe any taxes or child support.

To qualify for the master license you need one year of experience as a journeyman or Board-approved equivalent experience. For a journeyman's license you need to complete a Board-approved apprenticeship program or Board-approved equivalent experience. For a specialist license you need to complete Board-approved instruction, training, and experience. You may be able to get the Board to accept military or out-of-state work experience for these requirements.

The exam company is: International Code Council  900 Montclair Road  Birmingham, AL 35213  (877) 783-3926

If you have a plumber's license in New Hampshire you can get a Vermont license through a reciprocity agreement Vermont has with that state. Or if you can prove you have a valid plumber's license in another state with qualifications at least equal to Vermont's, and that state accepts Vermont plumbers' licenses, you can get a Vermont license without taking an exam. You'll still need to pay the fees.
